The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has confirmed that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing the former Anambra State governor to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Kwankwaso made the disclosure during an interview aired on Channels Television on Monday, saying he has no reason to doubt Obi’s pledge to relinquish power after a single tenure and support the return of the presidency to the North in 2031.

Responding to questions on whether Obi’s one-term commitment was binding, the former Kano State governor said the agreement was based on mutual trust but had also been formally documented.

He said both the party and the two candidates signed separate agreements outlining the arrangement.

According to Kwankwaso, the understanding is that an NDC administration, if elected, would serve one four-year term before power returns to the North.

He explained that he accepted the vice-presidential nomination after consultations with political stakeholders who believed a four-year southern presidency would promote national balance and strengthen unity.

Kwankwaso added that the arrangement reflects a broader consensus designed to preserve the principle of power rotation between the North and the South.

When asked whether he plans to contest the presidency in 2031, he said the party remains focused on its immediate objective of winning the 2027 election while keeping its medium- and long-term plans in view.

Obi had earlier pledged to serve only one term if elected, saying he would not remain in office beyond four years because of his commitment to political stability and the zoning principle.

The confirmation of the written agreement comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with power rotation expected to remain a key issue in the presidential race.
