The decisions were reached at the 167th Regular Meeting of the university’s Senate held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Uredo Omale, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

According to Omale, the examination misconduct case began on July 1 after the university received credible information that a lecturer was coordinating students to rewrite an examination at his residence.

Security operatives subsequently arrested Dr Maji Okpanachi of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology and some students at his residence, where exhibits were also recovered.

The matter was referred to the university’s Examination Misconduct Committee for investigation.

The committee later confirmed the security report and considered statements from the lecturer and students involved, alongside other available records.

It found that some students had rewritten BOT102, Introduction to Plant Science, at the lecturer’s residence several days after the examination had originally been conducted.

The investigation also found that the students allegedly paid N10,000 each to the lecturer to rewrite the examination.

Following consideration of the committee’s report, Senate approved the expulsion of six students for gross examination misconduct.

The lecturer, however, was not expelled. Senate approved his referral to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee for appropriate disciplinary action in line with the university’s rules and regulations.

The latest decision comes shortly after the university withdrew 27 students at its previous Senate meeting over poor academic performance and failure to register for two consecutive semesters.

The university has continued to emphasise academic discipline and examination integrity as part of its institutional standards.

Reacting to the latest disciplinary action, the Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Prof. Salisu Ogbo Usman, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence, discipline, integrity and quality assurance.

He said the institution would not tolerate acts capable of compromising the credibility of its academic and examination processes.

Usman commended the committees responsible for investigating the case and said the outcome demonstrated the university’s determination to strengthen accountability within the institution.

He urged students to remain focused on their studies and comply with the rules governing examinations and other academic activities.

The university also directed the affected students to surrender their identity cards and other university property to the appropriate authorities before leaving the institution.

The lecturer’s case will now be considered by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee, while the six students face expulsion over the examination misconduct established by the university’s investigation.
