Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has celebrated the engagement of his daughter, Adaeze, to a female partner.

Charly Boy shared a video from the engagement on Instagram on Thursday, describing the couple as his “beautiful Princess and her Husband” and asking his followers to wish them well.

“My beautiful Princess and her Husband. Folks, wish dem well for me,” he wrote.

Adaeze also announced the engagement on Instagram, sharing a photograph with her partner and declaring, “WE’RE ENGAGED!”

She accompanied the announcement with the hashtag #mrsandmrs and a message expressing her excitement about their future together.

“Here’s to a lifetime of love, laughter, growth, and making beautiful memories together. I can’t wait for everything God has in store for us. Forever sounds even sweeter with you,” she wrote.

The announcement has attracted significant attention on social media, with users posting both congratulatory messages and criticism of the relationship.

Charly Boy, also known as Area Fada, is known for his outspoken views on social and cultural issues and has frequently shared aspects of his family life with the public.

His decision to publicly celebrate Adaeze’s engagement has consequently become a major talking point alongside the couple’s announcement.

Adaeze has previously been married to a man, Metu Anu, with their traditional wedding held in Abuja in 2018. The marriage later ended in divorce.

The latest development also comes against Nigeria’s legal position on same-sex unions. The Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2013, prohibits same-sex marriage and civil unions and does not recognise such unions as valid marriages in Nigeria.

The law also prohibits the solemnisation of same-sex marriages in places of worship and contains provisions covering public displays of same-sex affection and other related activities.

Despite the legal and social sensitivities surrounding same-sex relationships in Nigeria, Charly Boy’s public message focused on celebrating his daughter and asking his followers to wish the couple well.

Adaeze’s own announcement similarly centred on her hopes for the future, describing the engagement as the beginning of a lifetime of love, growth and shared memories.

The engagement has now placed the Oputa family back in the spotlight, with public discussion extending beyond the ceremony to questions about personal relationships, family acceptance and Nigeria’s wider social and legal environment.

For Adaeze and her partner, however, the announcement marks a new chapter in their relationship, while Charly Boy has made his position clear by publicly celebrating the occasion.
