The Anambra State Government has urged voters to resist Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in the 2027 election, accusing the former governor of abandoning and undermining the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

The government made the call on Monday through a post on its official X account, managed by the New Media office of Governor Charles Soludo.

In a message titled “A Betrayal Alert for Ndi APGA,” the government accused Obi of working against the party that produced him as governor and urged APGA supporters to defend the party ahead of the 2027 election.

“Anambra is APGA. Ndi APGA, defend your home. Resist the NDC,” the government said.

The statement has opened another front in the increasingly bitter political differences between Obi and the Soludo administration as the 2027 presidential contest gathers momentum.

Obi governed Anambra from 2006 to 2014 before leaving APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party.

He later joined the Labour Party and contested the 2023 presidential election before moving to the African Democratic Congress and subsequently the NDC, where he emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

Soludo, meanwhile, has openly declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid.

In August 2025, the Anambra governor said his backing for Tinubu was partly rooted in their 22-year friendship and his assessment of the President’s economic and structural reforms.

“President Tinubu is my friend; he has been my friend for 22 years now and counting, so you don’t deny your friend,” Soludo said.

He added that he was impressed by Tinubu’s reforms and believed Nigeria was taking the right steps.

APGA later endorsed Tinubu as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

The party explained that its decision not to submit a presidential candidate to the Independent National Electoral Commission was deliberate, following a resolution by its National Executive Committee to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The development has effectively placed APGA and Obi’s NDC on opposing sides of the presidential contest, despite Obi’s long association with the Anambra-based party.

The Anambra government’s latest statement also accused Obi of abandoning APGA after leaving the party in 2014.

However, its claim that Tinubu stood with APGA in the 2015 election has been disputed by the historical record. APGA adopted then-President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2015 election and campaigned for his re-election.

The latest political confrontation also comes against the backdrop of a separate dispute over financial obligations linked to projects implemented during Obi’s tenure as governor.

The Anambra Government recently said eight external facilities associated with projects undertaken during Obi’s administration had a combined contracted value of $123.77 million, with $92.35 million outstanding as of June 30, 2026.

Obi rejected the description of the facilities as debts personally incurred by him.

He argued that the projects were largely World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development programmes negotiated by the Federal Government and accessed by participating states through subsidiary arrangements.

Obi also maintained that he neither personally approached financial institutions to borrow money nor issued a bond on behalf of Anambra.

The financial dispute has added another layer to the political tensions between the former governor and Soludo’s administration.

The NDC has now responded to the latest attack, accusing the Anambra Government of resorting to political attacks because of Obi’s growing popularity.

With APGA backing Tinubu and Obi leading the NDC into the 2027 presidential race, the latest exchange further highlights the political battle over Anambra’s electorate and the future direction of APGA.
