Abia Govt Raises Alarm: The Abia State Government has warned of an alleged plan to orchestrate a politically motivated protest aimed at destabilizing the state, citing intelligence reports of mobilization efforts involving youths and suspected troublemakers.
In a statement released Friday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, said authorities had received credible intelligence indicating that certain political actors were sponsoring a demonstration in Aba. The protest, reportedly tagged “Tinubu Dey Work, Otti Dey Chop,” is alleged to be designed to push a narrative that the state government is executing projects funded by the Federal Government.
Abia Govt Raises Alarm Over Planned Protest in Aba
According to the statement, officials believe the planned protest is intended to mislead the public and create tension within the state. Ekeoma stressed that the government had previously clarified that federal refunds related to such projects had already been discontinued, dismissing the claims as inaccurate.
The government further warned that the protest could escalate into confrontation, particularly between demonstrators and security operatives, including the State Task Force in Aba. Authorities fear that such clashes could trigger violence, endanger lives, and disrupt public order.
“The alleged plot is designed to trigger confrontation between the protesters and security operatives, particularly the State Task Force in Aba, which could escalate into violence, loss of lives, and a breakdown of law and order,” the statement noted.
Abia Govt Raises Alarm Ahead of 2027 Elections
Officials also suggested that the situation could be part of a broader political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections. The government expressed concern that attempts to create unrest may be aimed at undermining stability in the state as political activities begin to gather momentum.
Despite the warning, the state government reiterated its commitment to democratic principles and tolerance of political opposition. However, it emphasized that authorities would not hesitate to act against individuals or groups who attempt to threaten public safety under the guise of protest.
“While we reaffirm our commitment to democratic principles and tolerance of opposition, we will take decisive action against any individual or group found attempting to endanger public safety under the guise of political expression,” the statement added.
The government also appealed to parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against participating in protests that could potentially expose them to danger. Officials stressed that safety remains a priority and urged residents to remain vigilant.
Authorities further reassured residents of their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and a conducive political atmosphere. The statement emphasized that Abia remains open to political participation and free expression, provided such activities are conducted peacefully and within the law.
The warning comes amid heightened political activities across the country as stakeholders gradually position themselves ahead of the next general elections. Observers say tensions often rise during such periods, making early intervention crucial to preventing unrest.
Residents have been encouraged to go about their daily activities without fear, as the government assured that security agencies remain alert and prepared to maintain law and order across the state.
