Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has described captain Lionel Messi as “pure history” and “a legend” ahead of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final, urging football fans to appreciate the iconic forward while they still can.
Speaking during FIFA’s Fanatics Fest in New York, Scaloni praised the 39-year-old for leading Argentina to another World Cup final and described his achievements as extraordinary.
“He is pure history. A legend. Reaching a final at 39 years of age is unbelievable. We must enjoy him as it happens,” Scaloni said.

Argentina will face Spain in Sunday’s final as they attempt to defend the World Cup title they won in Qatar four years ago.
Despite Argentina’s experience in major finals, Scaloni insisted it offers no advantage against a Spain side that has also competed successfully on the biggest stages.
He described the European champions as a complete team capable of causing problems throughout the match.
Scaloni also credited Argentina’s mentality to the humble backgrounds of many of his players, saying they learned to play football without fear or pressure.
Messi shared a similar perspective, explaining that growing up playing football in neighbourhood streets and schools helped him develop resilience.
He said learning to lose from an early age made him stronger both as a footballer and as a person.
Sunday’s final could be Messi’s last appearance at a FIFA World Cup, adding another emotional chapter to one of the greatest careers in football history.
