The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, has dismissed claims that his political ambition is being driven by powerful interests, declaring that God remains his only source of support.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Friday, the Rivers governorship hopeful said he does not have a political godfather and rejected suggestions that he is merely advancing the political agenda of his elder brother, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
“I don’t have a godfather but I have God the Father,” he said.
According to him, his decision to seek the governorship seat is based on his personal convictions and vision for Rivers State rather than family influence.
“You would also agree with me that if my ambition is determined by the grounds you are mentioning, it would mean I have no clear vision or focus for what I am working toward,” he added.
Blessing Fubara said both he and the Rivers governor hold different political views and should not be perceived as operating from the same ideological platform.
“My brother, Nigerians and indeed the wider world saw what happened between him and his party. We have different political ideologies and individual perspectives,” he stated.
The NDC candidate described the current political atmosphere in Rivers State as challenging, saying several narratives have emerged in the wake of recent developments in the state.
“It is a trying moment for us in Rivers State and there are all sorts of narratives. They come with different narratives and try to set up a perspective for the people to run with, but we are focused with our eyes on the ball that the soul of Rivers State must be rescued,” he said.
His comments come amid continued political realignments in Rivers State following the prolonged crisis involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The dispute between both camps triggered months of political tension marked by impeachment threats, divisions within the state legislature and legal battles that reshaped the state’s political landscape.
Blessing Fubara formally entered the 2027 governorship race in May 2026 after obtaining the expression of interest and nomination forms of the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
His emergence sparked speculation that his ambition could be linked to the political fortunes of his elder brother, especially after Governor Fubara’s recent withdrawal from the APC governorship primaries.
However, the NDC candidate has maintained that his campaign represents a fresh political direction and should not be viewed as an extension of any existing political structure.
