Former senator Iyabo Obasanjo has appointed Gbolahan Peter Macjob, a journalist and filmmaker with experience at the British Broadcasting Corporation, as her spokesperson amid renewed political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointment was announced in a statement from Obasanjo’s media office shared with PUNCH Online on Monday.
According to the statement, Macjob is expected to use his journalism and media experience to communicate the former lawmaker’s positions, activities and public engagements.
“His professional profile and published work indicate experience in broadcast journalism, including contributions to BBC reporting,” the statement said.
The appointment comes as Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, renews her political engagement in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Macjob has worked in broadcast journalism, investigative reporting and documentary production. His professional experience includes work associated with BBC reporting and the BBC Africa Eye documentary, Black Axe: Nigeria’s Mafia Cult.
He has also established himself in filmmaking, directing Ireke: Rise of the Maroons, a historical drama exploring African resistance during the transatlantic slave trade.
In an interview published by The British Blacklist in July 2025, Macjob discussed the film’s historical themes and the importance of African filmmakers telling their own stories to international audiences.
His appointment is expected to bring experience in news gathering, broadcasting and visual storytelling to Obasanjo’s communications team.
The media office said his responsibilities would include communicating her activities and positions across traditional and digital platforms.
It also highlighted his filmmaking background and interest in developing the creative economy, particularly in Ogun Central.
“In addition to his journalistic experience, Macjob, also a filmmaker, brings his expertise in the creative sector – Nigeria’s second-largest employer after agriculture and one he’d be keen to scale up across Ogun Central,” the statement read.
Obasanjo represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Senate from 2007 to 2011. Before her election to the National Assembly, she served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health.
She later pursued an academic career in the United States before returning to active political engagement in 2026.
Her renewed involvement in politics has drawn attention in Ogun State as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2027 general elections.
In September 2026, her media aide, Odun Agbalajobi, addressed questions surrounding her political eligibility following a Supreme Court judgment on provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
Agbalajobi argued that reports suggesting the judgment had automatically disqualified Obasanjo from contesting the 2027 Ogun Central senatorial election were unsupported.
Macjob’s appointment adds a media professional with journalism and filmmaking experience to Obasanjo’s communications operation at a time of increased political activity in the state.
However, the announcement did not provide further details about the structure of his office or specific plans for his engagement with the creative sector.
The development places media communication and public engagement at the centre of Obasanjo’s renewed political activities as attention shifts towards the 2027 elections.
