The Zamfara State Police Command has rescued five travellers abducted by suspected bandits along the notorious Anka–Bukkuyum highway after a coordinated rescue operation that culminated in a gun battle with the attackers.
The rescue, carried out by operatives of the Anti-Violent Crime Response Unit, is the latest security breakthrough in a state that has remained one of Nigeria’s most troubled hotspots for banditry, kidnapping and rural attacks.
According to police authorities, the incident occurred on June 10 at about 7 p.m. when armed men barricaded the road and abducted five travellers.
Security operatives reportedly swung into action immediately after receiving distress information about the attack.
The police team mobilised to the scene and launched a rescue mission, tracking the kidnappers into nearby forests where an exchange of gunfire ensued.
Faced with pressure from the advancing security personnel, the attackers abandoned their captives and fled into the bush, some believed to have sustained gunshot injuries.
All five victims were rescued unharmed during the operation.
Police also recovered two motorcycles suspected to have been used by the criminals.
Security sources said officers acted on intelligence regarding the movement and activities of armed groups operating along the Anka–Bukkuyum corridor before launching the operation.
The rescued travellers were later evacuated to safety, while arrangements were initiated to reunite them with their families.
The Anka–Bukkuyum route remains one of the most vulnerable highways in Zamfara State due to its proximity to forest hideouts frequently used by criminal gangs. The corridor has witnessed repeated attacks on commuters, kidnappings and ambushes in recent years.
Authorities say security patrols have been intensified along the route as efforts continue to track down fleeing suspects and dismantle criminal networks operating in the area.
The latest rescue comes at a time when security agencies are under increasing pressure to curb banditry and kidnapping across Nigeria’s North-West region.
Police authorities urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing security operations.
Officials believe stronger collaboration between communities and security agencies will play a crucial role in preventing future attacks and improving safety along major highways across Zamfara State.
