A Scotland-based Nigerian fashion designer, Tobilola Tonueyi, has launched Heritage Confluence, a cultural project aimed at promoting the heritage of traditional Yoruba aso-oke while exploring its relationship with Scotland’s historic tartan textile tradition.

The project was unveiled during an inaugural exhibition at The Art Department in Paisley, Scotland.

Tonueyi, founder and Creative Director of Teeday Honts Couture, said the initiative was inspired by her passion for traditional textiles, which began during her childhood in Ibadan, Oyo State.

She explained that the idea emerged while preparing for an international event in Glasgow, where she became fascinated by Scotland’s textile heritage and the cultural significance of tartan.

The designer said months of research and collaboration with traditional aso-oke weavers in Nigeria resulted in a collection that brings together two historic weaving traditions while preserving the identity and craftsmanship of each.

The exhibition featured the first Heritage Confluence textile collection alongside the research, weaving process and creative journey behind the project, giving visitors a deeper understanding of both textile cultures.

According to Tonueyi, the initiative is designed to promote cultural exchange, preserve traditional weaving knowledge, encourage collaboration between educational and cultural institutions and inspire young designers to embrace their heritage as a source of creativity.

She stressed that the project does not seek to merge the two traditions into one but rather create a respectful dialogue between them.

“Heritage Confluence is not about blending two cultures until they become the same. It is about allowing two proud textile traditions to remain authentically themselves while discovering what they can create together. Fashion becomes the language, but heritage is the conversation,” she said.
