The Abia State Government has urged its 811 newly recruited healthcare workers to uphold integrity, professionalism and ethical standards as they begin public service, describing them as critical to rebuilding confidence in the state’s healthcare system.

The charge was given on Thursday during a one-day orientation programme held in Umuahia for the newly employed health professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists, dentists, dental therapists and technologists.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Abia State Civil Service Commission, Pastor Mrs. Ebere Jerry, reminded the recruits that healthcare workers are custodians of public trust because of the vital role they play in protecting lives.

She urged them to embrace five core values—integrity, professionalism, respect, compassion and patriotism—as guiding principles throughout their careers.

Jerry also advised the workers to maintain discipline by avoiding absenteeism, embracing teamwork, solving workplace challenges through proper channels and adhering strictly to ethical standards.

She warned against selling hospital consumables or demanding unofficial payments before rendering services, encouraging staff to report misconduct through the state’s whistleblower policy.

According to her, Governor Alex Otti’s administration is investing heavily in healthcare because healthy citizens are essential to economic growth and sustainable development.

She reiterated the governor’s commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare remains affordable and accessible to every resident of the state.

The Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere, also challenged the newly recruited workers to see themselves as key implementers of government policies aimed at improving healthcare delivery.

He said the success of the state’s healthcare reforms depends on their commitment, professionalism and dedication to duty.

The orientation programme included sessions on the Abia State Public Service Rules, Code of Conduct, Scheme of Service, career development, SERVICOM standards, ongoing civil service reforms and the vision of the New Abia Agenda.

The recruitment of the 811 health professionals is part of the state government’s efforts to strengthen manpower across public health facilities and improve healthcare services for residents.
