ABUJA — Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, have endorsed the proposed establishment of state police and the devolution of powers, describing the constitutional amendments as critical to tackling insecurity and strengthening Nigeria’s federal system.
The duo spoke during the 2026 National Assembly Open Week in Abuja, where they urged greater transparency, accountability and collaboration among the executive, legislature and citizens.
Gbajabiamila said the annual programme should go beyond symbolism by giving Nigerians meaningful access to legislative processes and encouraging public participation in governance.
He said transparency, inclusion and institutional reforms remain essential to building public trust and ensuring government responds effectively to evolving national challenges.
The former House Speaker also stressed that cooperation between the executive and legislature should focus on delivering measurable benefits for Nigerians through impactful legislation, effective oversight and development-oriented budgeting.
He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to maintaining a productive relationship with the National Assembly in advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking for the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures, Guwor described insecurity as Nigeria’s most pressing challenge and argued that constitutional reforms offer a practical path to improving governance and national security.
He commended Tinubu and the National Assembly for advancing proposals on state policing and power devolution, saying the reforms could strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture, improve coordination among different levels of government and reinforce true federalism.
Guwor added that tackling insecurity requires cooperation among governments, security agencies, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and local communities.
He pledged the continued support of state legislatures for the constitutional amendment process and expressed confidence that the proposed reforms would bring governance closer to the people if successfully enacted.
The 2026 National Assembly Open Week comes as lawmakers continue deliberations on key constitutional amendments, including state police, electoral reforms, judicial reforms, local government autonomy and broader devolution of powers.
