Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election and urged him to sustain good governance and continue meeting the needs of the people.

Obasanjo gave the charge during a surprise congratulatory visit to Adeleke at his residence in Ede, Osun State, on Sunday, a day after the governor secured a fresh mandate in the state governorship election.

According to a statement issued by Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday, Obasanjo was accompanied on the visit by Oyewole Fasawe.

The former president prayed for further success for Adeleke and urged him to remain focused on delivering the dividends of democracy.

“Continue to deliver good governance. Continue to meet the needs of your people,” Obasanjo told the governor.

The meeting also took on a celebratory tone, with Adeleke receiving the former president with dancing and a song of praise to God following his electoral victory. Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi was also present during the visit.

Adeleke expressed surprise at Obasanjo’s visit and thanked the former president for the gesture, while promising to remain committed to the people of Osun.

“Baba, I thank you for this surprise visit. I promise never to disappoint God, the Osun people and all lovers of democracy who made our victory possible,” Adeleke said.

The visit came shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Adeleke the winner of the August 15 governorship election.

The incumbent, who contested under the Accord Party, polled 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who recorded 444,815 votes.

Adeleke won by 66,252 votes in the keenly contested election, securing a second term in office.

The result has further strengthened Adeleke’s position in Osun politics, while also setting the stage for heightened political activity in the South-West ahead of the 2027 general elections.

President Bola Tinubu has also congratulated Adeleke on his victory and urged him to unite the people of Osun and focus on growth, stability and socio-economic progress.

For Adeleke, the celebrations now give way to the demands of a fresh four-year mandate.

Obasanjo’s message underscored the expectation that the governor should translate the electoral victory into improved governance, better services and tangible benefits for residents across the state.

With the election settled, attention will now shift to how Adeleke uses his renewed mandate and whether his administration can meet the expectations generated by his re-election.
