The Oyo State Government has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a work-free day for teachers across the state to commemorate this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde.
The government said the decision was in recognition of the contributions of teachers to the development of education and human capital in Oyo State.
It added that the work-free day would enable teachers to participate fully in activities organised to mark the occasion, reflect on developments in the education sector and strengthen unity among members of the teaching profession.
Teachers across the state are therefore expected to stay away from their regular teaching duties on Monday as part of the activities marking the annual celebration.
The government described teachers as critical contributors to the state’s education system and human capital development, stressing the importance of their role in shaping the future of children and strengthening society.
It congratulated teachers across Oyo State on the occasion and reaffirmed its commitment to policies and programmes aimed at improving teaching and learning.
The declaration comes as World Teachers’ Day is observed globally on October 5 every year.
The 2026 celebration is particularly significant as it marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, a landmark international framework on the teaching profession.
The Oyo Government said the special day would provide an opportunity for teachers to celebrate their profession, assess progress in the education sector and promote greater solidarity among education workers.
The state government also reiterated its commitment to improving the welfare, dignity and professional development of teachers.
It urged teachers to continue contributing to the development of the education sector while assuring them of continued government support.
The work-free day is specifically for teachers across Oyo State and is tied to activities marking the 2026 teachers’ celebration.
