The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation has designated Ogun State as one of Nigeria’s core states to drive the country’s transition to a circular economy under a flagship environmental sustainability programme.
The recognition places Ogun among the implementing states under Project 220145 Component 2, an initiative aimed at supporting Nigeria’s transition to net-zero emissions through circular economy policies and improved waste management.
The announcement was made during a UNIDO workshop in Abeokuta on the implementation of the Used Off-Grid Renewable Energy Equipment Waste Management Project.

Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, described the designation as an endorsement of the state’s environmental policies and climate change programmes.
He said the state had implemented several green initiatives, including distributing more than 3,000 biomass smokeless stoves, deploying electric motorcycles and compressed natural gas buses, and promoting waste recycling and resource recovery.
According to him, Ogun’s environmental programmes also include the Blue Box waste segregation scheme, Plastic for Cash recycling initiative, community recycling projects, cement industry decarbonisation efforts and material recovery centres.
UNIDO Nigeria’s National Field Coordinator, Emem Umana, praised Ogun’s commitment to environmental sustainability and urged the state to sustain its reforms, describing it as a model for other states pursuing green development.
