Borno Police Bury Four Officers: The Nigeria Police Force in Borno State on Sunday laid to rest four officers who lost their lives while repelling a terrorist assault on the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters.

The fallen officers — two inspectors and two constables — were honoured in solemn burial rites held in Maiduguri, following the deadly overnight attack that also targeted an internally displaced persons camp in Damasak.

According to the Borno State Police Command, the deceased officers were identified as Inspector Samuel Ezekiel of Nganzai Division, Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of 58 PMF Lafiya, Police Constable Bitrus Luka of Crack Squad BRS, and Police Constable Shaibu Bukar of Crack Squad BRS.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, said the burial took place in accordance with Islamic and Christian rites at the Kawar Maila Burial Ground and the Maximum Prison Burial Ground in Maiduguri.

“The solemn interment ceremony took place today, 05/04/2026, at the Kawar Maila Burial Ground and the Maximum Prison Burial Ground, Maiduguri, in accordance with religious rites,” Daso said.

Senior officers of the command, led by Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid, attended the funeral, alongside the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, ACP Jawi A. Mohammed, and other members of the command’s management team.

Police chaplaincy officers, including CSP Bukar Gajibo (Imam) and CSP Theophilus Mutum (Chaplain), led prayers for the repose of the officers’ souls and paid tribute to their service and sacrifice.

The officers were killed in the early hours of Saturday when suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in an attempt to overrun the town.

The police said the assailants attacked at about 1:00 a.m., deploying Rocket-Propelled Grenades and other sophisticated weapons.

Despite the heavy assault, officers on duty, supported by Police Mobile Force operatives and the Crack Squad on special duty, engaged the attackers in what the command described as a fierce gun battle.

While the attack was eventually repelled, a section of the station was damaged and an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier was partially burnt.

“Regrettably, four police personnel paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” the command said.

In a related incident the same morning, suspected terrorists also attacked the Mallam Fatori IDP Camp in Damasak at about 2:40 a.m., targeting a duty post manned by the Civilian Joint Task Force and local hunters.

During that assault, one hunter identified as Atom Abua, 40, was killed, while about 20 thatched houses and other property were destroyed by fire.

The Borno Police Command said combined teams of the police, military, CJTF and local hunters responded swiftly to both attacks, restored calm and reinforced security deployments in the affected communities.

Commissioner Abdulmajid has since ordered the deployment of additional manpower and operational assets to Nganzai and Damasak to prevent further incursions.

The latest attacks underscore the continuing security challenges in Borno State, the epicentre of the long-running insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East.
